Apple
- App Store Small Business Program: a reduced commission rate of 15% on paid apps and Apple In-App Purchases.
- Eligible: developers new to the App Store, and existing developers with up to 1 million USD in proceeds in the prior calendar year.
- If a participating developer passes 1 million USD in the current year, the standard commission rate applies to future sales.
Google Play
- 15% on the first $1M (USD) of revenue a developer earns each year; 30% on earnings above $1M.
- 15% on automatically renewing subscriptions, regardless of revenue.
- Google says 99% of developers subject to a service fee are eligible for 15% or less through its programs.
Where these fees appear in the calculator
The calculator adds the Apple fee (yearly) and the Google fee (once) to the first-year running cost when the platform you choose ships to that store. Commissions are a revenue question, not a build cost, so they are not included.
Questions
How much does an Apple developer account cost?+
Apple's enrollment page states that the Apple Developer Program annual fee is 99 USD and the Apple Developer Enterprise Program annual fee is 299 USD, in local currency where available. The fee recurs every year while you keep apps on the App Store.
How much does a Google Play developer account cost?+
Google Play Console Help states there is a US$25 one-time registration fee. It is paid once when you register, not yearly.
What commission does Apple take?+
Members of the App Store Small Business Program pay a reduced commission of 15% on paid apps and in-app purchases. Developers new to the App Store, and existing developers with up to 1 million USD in proceeds in the prior calendar year, can qualify. Above the threshold the standard commission rate applies; Apple's program page does not state that standard percentage, so we do not either.
What commission does Google Play take?+
In markets where Google's updated fees have not yet rolled out, Google lists 15% on the first $1M of revenue a developer earns each year, 30% above that, and 15% on automatically renewing subscriptions. Google also says 99% of developers subject to a service fee are eligible for 15% or less through its programs, and it is rolling out a revised structure market by market, so check the page for your market.
